Offered at the University of South Australia since 2013, experiential learning provides an educational praxis whereby skills and knowledges are acquired through processes of participation and the transformative nature of reflection. Yuntuwarrun: Learning on Country Ron Nicholls1 and Tangikina Moimoi Steen2 Abstract This article explores the notion of “learning on country” as a pedagogical approach through engagement with Aboriginal communities and organisations in the context of a masters sustainable design course. In addition the paper offers practical examples of how this understanding of comicbook lore can be used for cultivating a new quality of life on a planetary scale. Part 2 provides portraits of individual characters from comicbook lore, their evaluation, and their significance toward raising collective archetypal awareness of the psyche’s relationship with Earth-an ecopsychological framework. Part 1 provides a theoretical examination of how definitions of the terms myth and hero and hero’s journey are framed, and their implications for understanding personal and transpersonal growth. Likewise the ecopsychological significance of modern fictional characters in comicbooks, graphic novels, and films will be examined. This paper explores how mythical figures and comicbook superheroes can 1) inspire personal growth, social and planetary change, and 2) explicate aspects of the deep ecology movement and transpersonal ecosophy that invite further academic inquiry while at the same time 3) speak to concerns that ignite the interests of popular culture and personal mythology. Our rivers, lakes and watersheds are increasingly polluted primarily by industrial waste and a cultural failure to treat water as a sacred resource, leaving human and more-than-human communities around the world with The planet is experiencing the first human-caused mass species extinction. The oceans' fisheries have declined radically as fishing practices have become more and more mechanized and indiscriminate. ![]() Deforestation and soil loss from hundreds of years of over-logging, overdevelopment, and increasingly industrialized mono-crop agriculture (also possible due to the use of fossil fuels) has diminished wildlife habitat, increased desertification, and is ironically threatening the world's capacity to equitably provide food. CO 2 levels are higher than they have ever been while humans were on the earth. Climate change caused by increasing levels of CO 2 in the atmosphere (largely due to the burning of fossil fuels) is causing all sorts of calamities including glacial melt and rising sea levels, melting tundra, extreme weather patterns, shifts in insect and animal habitat and behavior, and more. The Earth is facing a myriad of cascading crises that are for the most part human created. This essay looks at foundational ideas across a variety of disciplines and interconnected points of focus within ecofeminist work, including conceptual, political, spiritual, sociosymbolic, literary, and ethical, particularly as these are relevant to critical issues within educational thought and practice. Given the global environmental and social crises currently sweeping the planet, ecofeminism offers important, albeit diverse, theoretical, practical, and pedagogical perspectives for developing effective responses to such interrelated crises. ![]() Ecofeminism is a theoretical, political and educational movement that draws specific parallels between the domination of women and other marginalized groups, and the degradation of nature.
